The fourth annual Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra Young Composers Competition invites all applicants who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate composition program in Canada. Please provide by email:

  • A current résumé
  • Two reference letters from recognized professional musicians
  • A PDF score of an existing composition for mixed ensemble of 9 instruments or more (duration: 5 minutes or more)

Applicants are encouraged to include a MIDI file or recording of the work. Applications must be received no later than March 1, 2016. An independent jury will select the winner.

The winning composer will be invited to write a short work for full orchestra which will be premiered by the NSYO as part of the 2016–2017 season. Music Director Dinuk Wijeratne will serve in an advisory capacity throughout the creation process. The duration, specific instrumentation, and concept of the new work will be discussed with the winner, based on the conditions of the particular program in which it will be placed.
